Renewing a Permanent Resident (PR) Card
A Permanent Resident (PR) Card is proof of PR status and is required for travel back to Canada by commercial carrier. PR cards are usually valid for 5 years. If your card is expired or close to expiry, you must apply for a renewal.
When to Renew
Apply if:
Your PR card is expired or expiring soon
Your card is lost, stolen, or damaged
You need a valid PR card for travel
Residency Requirement
To renew, you must generally have:
730 days of physical presence in Canada within the last 5 years, or
Meet a valid exception under the residency obligation rules
Key Points
Renewal does not change your PR status
Processing can take several months
Traveling without a valid PR card may require a PR Travel Document (PRTD)
Renew your PR card early and ensure your residency history is accurate to avoid delays or refusal.
