Category-Based Selection in Express Entry

Category-based selection is a targeted system within Express Entry that allows Canada to invite candidates who meet specific labour-market needs, even if their CRS score is lower than general draw cut-offs. Instead of competing with the entire pool, candidates are selected within priority categories.

How It Works

Applicants must first qualify under one of these programs:
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
IRCC then conducts category-specific draws, inviting candidates with the highest CRS scores within that category only.

Main Categories

1.Healthcare occupations
2.STEM occupations
Skilled trades
3.Trade occupations
4.Agriculture and agri-food
5.French-language proficiency
6.Education occupations

Categories may change based on Canada’s  labour  needs.

Why It Matters

Often lower CRS cut-offs than general draws
Better chances for in-demand occupations
Strong pathway for applicants without provincial nomination

Who Benefits Most?

Healthcare, trades, and STEM workers
Candidates with strong French language skills
Temporary workers in Canada with relevant experience
Applicants with moderate CRS scores

Key Reminder

Meeting a category does not guarantee an invitation. Your work experience, NOC code, and language results must be accurate and valid at the time of the draw.
